Diving Activity in Thailand

Diving In ThailandThailand is a wonderful country with some excellent diving. To the west of Thailand is the Andaman Sea, and to the east the Gulf of Thailand. The best diving is on the Andaman Sea side, both in the south and further north in the Similan Islands. The best time to visit Thailand is from October to April. Heavy rainfall hits the Andaman coast in May and continues until September. From May to October, therefore, the Gulf of Thailand to the east would be a better option. The best diving on this side is around Koh Tao. Thailand has very clear waters and an average sea temperature of 28oC.

Diving Underwater In ThailandDiving in Phuket and liveaboards in Thailand, the Andaman Sea offers dive sites considered to be among the top ten scuba destinations in the world. Phuket is often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the South’ and for scuba divers it’s certainly the crown jewel of the Andaman Sea. This island paradise lies only 8 degrees north of the equator; it enjoys a tropical climate with average water temperature of 28°C/78°F and has an amazing variety of aquatic life.

Underwater Diving In ThailandThe Similans are another excellent diving destination in Thailand. They are a national park comprising nine small islands 90 km Northwest of Phuket. There are no dive operators on the islands: to do them justice you need to take a liveaboard. Khao Lak is the closest place from which to travel, but boats also operate out of Phuket and Ao Nang.

For group or family travelers, all good live aboard operations will take non-divers along at a substantially reduced fee. Friends and family can relax, swim, sunbathe, snorkel and still enjoy the food, trip, scenery and experience of sailing in some of the world’s most beautiful waters.

Hill Tribe Trek - Chiang Mai - Thailand

Hill Tribe Trek Tha Village“During our trek we meet and stay with several different hill tribes including Karen, Lahu and Shan tribes. Each ethnic group is unique, with their own languages and distinct cultures and spiritual beliefs. Our accommodation is in basic village huts. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places!”

Hill Tribe Trek PeopleNestled in the lush, mountainous terrain of northern Thailand, centuries removed from the frantic urban-mania of Bangkok and the country's crowded coastlines, the Hill Tribes of Thailand offer a glimpse into the country's true cultural origins. The best way to penetrate this distinct culture? Your own two feet. Trek into the northern highlands into the region's dense jungle, crossing streams, rafting down rivers, and dipping into waterfall pools while following your local guide down elusive jungle trails. End each day in a different tribal village, dining on bamboo, banana, peapods, green pumpkin, and rice whiskey. Then relax on the porch of a teak house elevated six feet off the ground. Wake to a rooster's call and watch dawn push the mist off of the forest leaves before strapping on your pack and hitting the trail, ready to do it all over again.

Hill Tribe Trek GroupLocated 430 miles from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is Thailand's second-largest city and the best starting point for hill tribe trekking. Most treks take three to seven days and explore the area north of the Kok River in the infamous Golden Triangle, as well as south of Kok River, around Chiang Dao, Wiang Papao, the Mae Tong river, and Mae Hong Son. But consider spending some time in Chiang Mai itself before heading to the hills. Though western trapping such as Internet cafes, McDonald's, and Holiday Inns have sprung up, many consider the city much more livable than Bangkok, and with its high-quality accommodations, friendly people, and diversions like Thai massage, Raja yoga centers, vipassana (meditation), Thai cooking, and the many wats (temple-monasteries) in the surrounding wilderness, you'll have no trouble finding something to keep you distracted before lacing up the boots and strapping on the pack.

Sea Similan Island Phangnga Thailand
A group of 9 small islands 50 kms. off the west coast of Phang-Nga in the Andaman Sea. The National Park covers an area of 80,000 rai. Skin Diving Magazine rated them among the ten loveliest places on Earth, because of the great natural beauty found on the islands themselves and also because of the extensive surrounding coral gardens beneath the waves. The islands are undeveloped and unspoiled; numerous species of fish, crustaceans, and other forms of sea-life abound; water clarity and diving are excellent. Similan is corrupted from the Malay Sembilan and means nine. From north to south in order the islands are: Koh Bon, Koh Ba Ngu, Koh Similan, Koh Pahyoo, Koh Miang (two islands), Koh Pahyan, Koh Payahng and Koh Hu Yong.

View Of Similan Island Phangnga Thailand
The Similan Islands are consistently ranked as one of the top ten dive sites in the world, and there is good reason to believe they will remain that way for future generations. The Thai Government can be justly proud of their efforts to preserve and protect this group of pristine islands. In one effort the Fishing Dept placed mooring buoys in the most popular anchorage's allowing visiting boats to tie up rather then dropping an anchor and risk damaging the fragile reef. It is easy to applaud all efforts to preserve the wild, unspoiled beaches, magnificent coral reefs, and the turquoise blue water of this special area.

In Similan Island Phangnga Thailand
Koh Similan islands are rich in flora and fauna. The islands are the combination of several forest types, and the convergence of evergreen forest and coral reef. The bio diversity ranges from the world's largest whale shark to rare birds such as Nicobar Pigeon and Pied Imperial Pigeon, as well as 27 species of mammals, 22 species of reptiles, and at least 4 species of amphibians. These animals have been living in these nature long before the first human came.

Elephant Round-Up Festival - Surin - Thialand

Elephant Festival Surin Thailand

The most popular of Northeastern festivals with foreign tourists is the Surin Elephant Round-up which is held annually in November which is held in Thailand. The people of Surin have long been renowned for their skill in capturing and training wild elephants and the round-up. In the past wild elephants lived in the forest areas of nearby Cambodia. Unfortunately, these areas have been inaccessible due to civil war in Cambodia, and at the same time, the elephant population is markedly decreasing thus the elephant catchers must now make a living by taking their charges around the country giving shows.

Elephant Round Up Festival Surin Thailand

The greatest event of the Surin round-up is a beautifully organised display of the talents and abilities of these superb beasts. The round-up first look place in 1960. It begins with a mass procession of all the elephants taking part, usually 120-150, ranging from calves only a few weeks old to the well-trained elephants with many decades of experience.

Elephant Round Up Competition Festival Surin Thailand
During the show, hundreds of the huge animals demonstrate their prowess at moving logs, playing soccer and winning a tug-of-war against human teams. Other demonstrations are designed to show not only the great strength of the elephants but also show they can be very intelligent, gentle and obedient. The show concludes with a mock battle illustrating what was formerly an important part of their duties.

Phi Ta Khon - Loei - Thailand

Phi Ta Khon Festival Loei ThailandThere is an amazing festival called Phi Ta Khon happening in Thailand next week, as it does every July. Sadly I won't be able to attend as I'll be in Malaysia, but I would dearly love to see this - a sort of Thai Halloween which celebrates the story of the Buddha returning from a long journey and the celebrations being so loud they wakened the dead who joined in the festivities. The festival is celebrated with spectacular spirit masks and ghostly clothing - as you can imagine, the kids love it. The festival is centred around the town of Loei in northern Thailand.

Phi Ta Khon is a type of masked procession celebrated on the first day of a three-day Buddist merit-making holiday know in Thai as "Boon Pra Wate". The annual festival takes place in May, June or July at a small town of Dan Sai in the northeastern province of Loei. Phi Ta Khon is held with the arrival of the sixth or seventh lunar month. Young male villagers prepare their ghostly attire and masks, while children roam around town playing tricks. Sheets or blankets are sewn together to look like shrouds while traditional wooden bamboo containers used to store sticky rice (huad), are creatively fashioned into bizarre hats. The huge masks are carved from the bases of coconut trees. The spirit masks are the integral part of the celebrations, which last for three consecutive days.

The first day is marked by a masked procession, accompanied by rejoicing, music and dancing. On the second day, the villagers dance their way to the temple and fire off bamboo rockets to signal the end of the procession. Along the way, they tease onlookers as they accompany a sacred image of the Buddha through the village streets. Monks recite the story of the Buddha's last incarnation before attaining enlightenment.

On the last day of the event, the villagers gather at the local temple, Wat Ponchai, to listen to the message of the thirteen sermons of the Lord Buddha, recited by the local monks. The ghost dancers then put away their ghostly masks and costumes for another year, return to the paddy fields and continue to earn their living with the onset of the new crop season.
