A Day Out in Oxfordshire

Sunday was another nice day of some local sightseeing. We started out at Dorchester Abbey, which is quite close by and which we first tried out our tripod last March. This time we had little need of the tripod, being armed with our super-duper-image-stablized-zoomy lens instead. We got some great new pictures of the church, both of the outside (the sun was out this time) and the wonderful inside

Getting to the top of Europe at 11,333 feet - Jungfrau

Enroute to Jungfrau -Interlaken ,Lauterbrunnen and views from train

They say the best is always served at the last ..Well, and Jungfrau was our last destination before we left Europe. I will however reserve Jungfrau pics as my last post in this series ..but before that, it will not be fair if I dont talk about the journey and the views ..though pale in comparison to the snow clad peaks and glaciers, the journey is an experience in itself

Jungfrau in German means maiden or virgin and this peak is at 12,000 feet , right on top of Europe. The most spectacular aspect is that the Jungfraubahn cog railway which literally takes you right through the mountain to the doorstep of the peaks and glaciers . The railway station is at the heighest point in Europe .

Zurich was our base as we did not want to spend the last couple of days in Switzerland lugging our luggage..So, on the last day, we left early enough and took a train to Interlaken . It was beautiful out there , but we were not patient enough to take in the sights. So we took a ticket via Lauterbrunnen to the Jungfrau . The other option is to go to Griendelwald which is a glacier and resort town which is flocked by tourists .

Our fairy tale train took us through Lauterbrunnen where we shot these pictures with lots of glares and reflections and reached Kleine Scheidegg . This is the point from where the Jungfraubahn railway starts its steep climb into the mountains meandering through a long 7 km tunnel .There are two stops. One at the Eiger and the other at Eismeer which means sea of ice .The entire journey is a little less than an hour and the return about half an hour . The Aletsch glacier beckons you and you can freeze in an Ice Palace amongst other attractions or just refresh yourself in the restaurants ..Can you believe it, there is one called Bollywood out there ? It was closed though and I wouldnt be surprised if Yash Chopra has anything to do with it !

Next : Pics of Jungfraujong and no text ..and Happy Deepavali

Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November

It's that time of the year in Britain again - Guy Fawkes Day, aka Bonfire Night. Mainly it's a good excuse for fireworks! Poor things don't have Independence Day, after all. If you'd like to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day and don't have any fireworks handy, rent V for Vendetta. It has Natalie Portman in it and is quite good.Last year we stood around a large bonfire by the Wolfson Pond on the River

Worcestershire and Herefordshire Churches

Last Thursday we took a day trip up north to Worcestershire and Herefordshire, counties which are not too far from the Welsh border. Our first stop was Pershore Abbey, because it was on the way and I had an article on it that needed pictures. We didn't stay long, but it was pretty cool on the outside and had some interesting features on the inside. It looks rather stubby because it was once a huge

Switzerland- Zurich, Lucerne and Mt Pilatus

Switzerland was my last port of halt in my maiden Europe trip and sad, we had just a couple of days ..Lush greenlands, snow capped mountains, deep blue lakes, fragrant flowers and the music of cow bells makes one lethargic .The tired feet call for rest . You want to pause and take in the ambience ..

We landed in Zurich after a long overnight 12 hour train journey from Rome. After meandering through various tunnels, we found ourselves in the comfortable St Josefs pension and hotel in the morning. The long journey had taken a bit of toll on me...spirit was willing but the flesh was weak . After much persuasion we got our room as the kind hearted receptionist allowed it around 3 hours early . Our original plans were to head immediately to Lucerne and thereafter to Titlis, but at the station we were told that it was too late to head to Titlis (It was about 11 am then ) so we took the train to Lucerne and headed straight to Mt Pilatus

7000 feet above sea level, the ride is amazing .It is supposed to be the worlds steepest cogwheel railway and its worth every moment .We pass verdant meadows and kisses flowers, beautiful lakes melting in front of our eyes only to be carpeted by mist ..the mountains themselves are amazing ...you can see almost 70 different peaks and about 5 lakes..

We have plenty of company here-the alpine choughs and they would crowd around , looking for hospitability and charity from the tourists ..clear instructions are put everywhere not to feed them..so there is one guy looking forlorn ...

One can trek and enjoy the views if the clouds and the mist dont play spoil sport . We took the cog wheel railway one way and returned by the cable car on the other . The route was fairly simple..we bought the pass from Lucerne station and hopped on to the train to Alpnachstad from where the cog wheel train lifts you up to the mountain . The return is by cable car via Kliens ..You could even go by boat from Lucerne and take a bus back ...

To say Lucerne is pretty is an understatement . Its charming and relaxing , quaint and romantic..we practically did nothing . Just spent time walking down the chapel bridge, the wooden bridge built in the 14th century . The bridge runs by the octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm), a fortification from the 13th century. Inside the bridge are a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Luzern's history. We walked around the lake and watched the swans and ducks swim from one end of the lake to the other .

We loved Zurich .It was one of the big bad metroes that had the charm of a small town and the grandeur of a city. We did what people do in all big cities, shopped, dined and walked. The River Limmat soothed the tired nerves as we let the calm waters massage our weary eyes ..We walked up to the lake and the gardens close by . The Alstadt or the old town was a complete contrast to the Bahnhofstrasse and the parade Platz which were the shopping arenas and the banking centre . We even found an Indian restaurant called the Khans where we tucked in vegetable biriyani . Our only regret - we missed Madras Cafe !
