Join us on the Hoysala trail

Arun and I have been planning for ages to get into the travel space. And we finally did over coffee one afternoon when we realized that we both had the same interest. Both of us were fascinated by the Hoysalas and the Malenadu region and after days of pouring over history books and a century old ASI documents we launched our first tour - The Lesser Known Hoysala temples. We also added a coffee trail and a birding trip to the heritage tour and lo, we became tour guides as well.

We had a trial run last month with friends who gave us a lot of motivation and now we are back again. This time, we would like to invite you to join us. The trip would cover temples off the tourist track, go to the ancient town of Dwarasamudra and its ruins, the temple called Velapuri also called Belur on the banks of the River Yagachi. We promise that it will not be a history class, but will present you with some colourful details of the lives of the kings and queens as well..:)

We look forward to having you with us.Do join us and you can mail me at lakshmi.sharath@gmail.com or arun at arunchs@yahoo.com for any information. The details are in the brochure.(Pls click on it to see it in full)

Tour of the West 2: Idaho Mission and Missoula

In May, David and I took a three-week road trip from our home in Portland to Minnesota, to visit some of my relatives and tour the Great American West along the way. This post is part of a series on the highlights of our trip.Idaho MissionAfter driving through some lovely scenery in northern Idaho after Coeur d'Alene, we came upon a nice surprise - a state heritage sign indicating the presence of

A speck in the horizon..

I was in Sindhudurg on the Konkan coastline last week when the dramatic skies above the Arabian Sea changed from a bright blue to gold to rosy pink to grey and black. We spent every day at a different beach, but this picture of the Tarkarli Beach stands out in my mind. It may not enter a picture post card contest, but it gave me a perspective of life..how insignificant and small we human beings are when compared to nature. It reminds of the last two lines of Keats'(my all time fav poet) sonnet, " When I have fears that I may cease to be " ..

...then on the Shore
Of the wide world I stand alone and think
Till Love and Fame to Nothingness do sink.."

What does it remind you of ?

On the road again

I am travelling again and this time I am exploring a new destination in India. They say this district has forts, beaches, forests , mango orchards, old temples and also promotes rustic tourism.Whats more , its very close to a destination which is almost everybody's favorite..any guesses ?

While you are at it, this is one of my favourite pictures from the Hoysala trip . A Kalyani called Hulekere which is in Dwarasamudra, the capital of the Hoysala Dynasty , what we today call Halebeedu. Most of us know of one temple in Halebeedu, but in our weekend tour, Arun and I took the group to almost 8 of them including ruins.

The Malenadu skies

I donned a new role last weekend - From a travel writer to a tour guide . Arun and I are planning to launch weekend tours and we did a trial run last weekend . We took a group of friends to the ruins of an ertswhile dynasty called the Hoysala Dynasty which ruled the Malenadu region of Karnataka. Malenadu means Land of the hills and the kings were called Male chiefs or lords of the hills. This dynasty which ruled for over 400 years during the 10th-14th century was known for the temples they built, a staggering 1500 of which hardly 100 remains. Our trip was to some of the lesser known temples which are not in the tourist circuit . We were standing at the portals of one of the temples when the evening sky changed colours as the moon emerged

Watch this blog for more on our trip to the Hoysala Dynasty .

A detour to Melkote

Posted by Picasa

The journey called life is a sum total of a series of decisions taken by every individual and some of those decisions are rather impulsive. We took one such impulsive decision yesterday which took us to Melkote, an ancient temple near Mysore.

Villas in Villages

Every time I go past rural India, I stop by at the village houses. They are simple, functional and have a charm of their own. I know I will find it difficult to adjust to the houses, but I cant stop admiring them. Tell me which one would you like to own.

I have not had too much time to blog or follow posts for the last couple of weeks, but I have been busy with some friends who were visiting. Ive also been tied up with a couple of projects in the travel space and will be sharing them with you guys by the end of this month

Not much of travel and travel writing has happenned either, except that Paramount Airlines published my story on Ashtamudi in their in flight magazine , Windows and Aisles, while my column in the Inside Story in Metro Plus last week was about Darasuram, a Chola town of the 12th century.

Cultures of India

I havent been travelling much for the couple of months and hence there is very little to post about my trips. Ive been recently interested in birds and although the identification parade is a little new to me, Im very happy to be in the midst of a forest and observe them , their colours and their behaviour. However, Im not going to post anything about them as yet, but here is a guest post from an acclaimed travel writer, blogger and photographer Arun Bhat.

Arun has been blogging on India Travel Blog for more than four years and Im inspired by him totally. An IT professional, Arun gave up his day job to drive down the road not taken. He also has a flickr group where he shares and reviews photographs and gives tips on photography. Over to Arun, who is now taking us behind the scenes of performing arts of our country with his photographs .

Across the length of the country, we see so many cultures that have their own distinct identities. The way of life, festivals, celebrations and arts vary from state to state, and many times, from one corner of a state to other. A few hours of journey can take us to a different landscape inhabited by people with no resemblance to those from the place we have left behind. Art forms of various kind exist all along. The one similarity among these is the love of celebratory colours that get used generously. Here is an attempt to capture those colours in frame.

Kathakali. A dance-drama from Kerala with a history of more than 400 years. The make-up and costume of Kathakali artists is so elaborate that it takes more than six hours for the team to get ready for the performance. It was once called Ramanattam, as the the story narrated was always from Ramayana. Over the years, Kathakali expanded to performing stories from Mahabharatha. The artist in picture is angry Bheema in search of Dushyasana, eager to avenge the humiliation of many years.

Theyyam. Another art form from Kerala, popular in the northern districts of Kasargod and Kannur. Theyyam is always performed at a temple premises, and each temple tends to have its own variation of the Theyyam. The deity of the temple speaks through the artist during the performance, and the devotees often gather to ask questions and request solutions for their problems.

Yakshagana. It is hard not to draw parallels between Kathakali and Yakshagana, a dance-drama from coastal Karnataka. Yakshagana too, narrates stories from Ramayana and Mahabharatha. The dances however vary considerably. While Kathakali artists never speak but enact in silence, Yakshagana mixes music with conversations between artists, a bit like a modern play.

Bhoothada Kola. Another art form from costal Karnata too, has parallels with its neighbour in the form of Theyyam. The costumes are different but similar, and so are some intricacies of the performances.

Another performing art from Karnataka, captured at the government sponsored folk festival in Bangalore.

The cham dances are an intriguing performance in the regions of India that were once under Tibetan influence. One can see cham dance performances in the monasteries of Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The dances represent the triumph of good over evil, and are an essential part of festivals in the monasteries.

Capturing performances can pose several challenges to the photographer. Low light can be a major problem in stage shows. Distance to the stage may not enable the photographer to get up close with the artists. When the performance happens in an open arena, like in the case of Theyyam, finding a convenient place to shoot and make space among the crowds is a difficult proposition. The swift movement of the artists can add to the challenge in all occasions.

Good equipment can help overcome some of these problems. The on-stage low light is countered with fast lenses with wide aperture, and camera/lenses that compensate for movement and vibration. A long telephoto lens can help captures expressions of the performers. Alertness of the photographer is equally important. Often, there is little time to get your camera in position, compose and then shoot. By the time one is ready, the artist would have moved on to the next step, leaving the photographer without a shot of that special moment. The way out is to stay ready all the time, with the viewfinder cupped to the eye. In many occasions when the steps are repetitive, use predictability to your advantage.

It is important to capture every possible visualizations. A wide angle shot covering the entire stage with many artists and musicians gives a perspective of what is happening. A close-up shot showing the elaborate make-up and facial expressions brings the subject alive and conveys the emotions involved to the viewer.

Sacred Destinations in Oregon

Despite its relatively short history, my home state of Oregon does have some notable and historic sacred places. Below are two that my husband and I visited recently.Old Scotch ChurchThe Old Scotch Church in Hillsboro (west of Portland) was built in 1878 by 12 settlers from Aberdeenshire in Scotland. Its style is called Carpenter Gothic, which is a modest, North American form of Gothic Revival

Cultural Learnings in San Francisco, Part 2

On Friday we continued our celebration of diversity by exploring Chinatown, Japantown, and the Fillmore District of San Francisco. It was a fine morning, so David headed out early to take pictures from the Golden Gate Bridge and Coit Tower. He had a great time. Later we met up in Chinatown, which was absolutely fantastic. It is the largest one outside of Asia and the oldest in the United States. At

Cultural Learnings in San Francisco

My conference in San Francisco was only one day so we had lots of time for sightseeing, including two full days spent exploring an amazing variety of world cultures without leaving the city! San Francisco is one of the most diverse cities I've visited, which makes it very interesting. In addition to the multi-ethnic population, we enjoyed rubbing elbows with many European tourists (especially

Of kings and empires

Here is a portrait of a map depicting the empire of the Chola Dynasty that ruled South India and parts of South East Asia under Rajendra Chola 1 in the 11th century. This map lies lost in a thatched hut which houses the museum as well. And the thatched hut is in a forgotten town called Gangaikondacholapuram, the erstwhile capital that once ruled over this entire empire. Today the town doesnt exist, except for an unfinished massive Brihadeshwara temple that resembles the one in Thanjavur, built by Rajendra's father, Raja Raja Chola . Here is a painting of the king , Rajendra himself - in the same museum .

Please click on both the pictures to see the enlarged versions

Road Trip to San Francisco

Last week we made a short road trip down to San Francisco on the excuse of attending a web-related conference. There is so much to see there and we had a wonderful time. We also stopped at some fantastic places along the way, including Sonoma, Mt. Shasta and Crater Lake. I'll be posting more photos from our trip over the next week or so, so stay tuned!

Kollam - Once upon a time..

I will park down the road, madam…you can take as many pictures as you want..I will be waiting here,” smiles my taxi driver as he opens the door for me . He had just returned from the Gulf where he says his retail business had gone bust .A couple of busses whiz past and the Needakara bridge fans out in front of me. On either side of the bridge is a fabric of deep blues that merge with the horizon. A flock of kites fly into my path interrupting the seamless blue as they scoop down and then fill the sky. This is where the Ashtamudi lake joins the Arabian Sea . A small fishing hamlet, now a tourist spot with ferries and houseboats – it tells the story of Kerala tourism

The bridge vibrates as busses speed past on their way to Kollam, or Quilon , the erstwhile Designanadu. “You know , madam, there is a proverb in Malayalam which says “Once you have seen Kollam you would no more need your illam (Home)" There were so many palaces here ,it was a very rich town “ he says in a mix of English,Hindi,Malayalam as I get in . He sounds proud to be back, I thought as there was no remorse regarding his homecoming .

I look at my watch and realize that I have just an hour to go . I do not have the time to see the palaces , I tell him and he agrees to take me around the town with two halts - the Kollam beach and the old Thangasherry lighthouse. He continues,” Tourists go to Kochi, Azhapura, Kumarakom , Kovalam, but not many know that this is the original Travancore kingdom. We call it Kollavarsham –the beginning of our Malayalam calendar ..” And that’s where I get my little dose of history.

Kollam, located on the banks of the Ashtamudi lake was once a prosperous ancient sea port, carrying on trade with Chinese , the Romans . Phoenicians ,the Portuguese, Dutch and the British . You take a look at the Chinese nets on the Ashtamudi lake and realize they are reminiscent of the old Chinese settlement that used to be here. It is said that Marco Polo, the Venician traveller, who was in Chinese service under Kublahan in 13th century visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast, as a Chinese mandarin.

The 144 ft tall Light House of Thangasherry look down on me as I see the coastline .The bright afternoon sun does not allow me to linger further . I shut down my guide book and listen to my driver who regales me with more stories.

This story was published in my column, Inside Story on Metro Plus a couple of months ago. The pictures posted here were taken by my husband Sharath . Please do us a favour by clicking on the pictures you like and see the enlarged versions. To see more posts on Kollam and Ashtamudi, click here and here .

I also thought that I could submit this post as a part of Skywatch Fridays, a meme dedicated to the skies worldwide. To see more skies, click here.
