Sanuk, a Thai term usually translated as “Fun,” is a much-valued pursuit and covers a wide range of activities. Prominent among them are various traditional sports that despite such innovations as Western football and bowling have never lost their appeal to the vest majority of Thais, especially in rural areas. During leisure time, almost any open field or festival offers a display of some kind, from the balletic ferocity of Thai-style boxing to more esoteric amusements such as a struggle between two giant horned beetles or multicolored Siamese fighting fish.

Thai Boxing (Muay Thai)

In modern Thai-Style boxing, gloves are used but in most other ways it is similar to the sport of the past. Any part of the body, except the head, can be used as an offensive weapon. Some professional matches give rise to a fair amount of betting. This very popular sport is now practiced all over the world.

The Martial Arts

As this old illustrated manuscript shows, boxing was an important part of self-defense. In the old days, no gloves were used and both hand and feet were bound in cloth that often constrained bits of ground glass for added effect. Several Ayutthaya kings were famed for their skill in this graceful yet lethal art.

Takraw

In its traditional form, the game of takraw, which is also popular in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, involves keeping a hollow rattan ball aloft as long as possible. The circle of players can used their feet, knees, elbows and head but not their hands. Group of young men start a casual takraw game almost anywhere during a break from work or school, demonstrating remarkable grace and footwork.

Professional “Takraw”

Over the years, more professional forms of takraw have evolved, using nets to separate opposing teams or high baskets through which the ball must be sent, along with strict rules of play. Takraw competitions of this kind are often held in Bangkok at Sanam Luang and also at the Asian Games. The sport has been as Olympic event since the Atlanta Games.

“Chula” Kites

The detail above, from an old mural printing, show a chula, or “male”, kite caught in a temple roof. On breezy afternoons during the hot season, kites of all kinds can be seen in the sky above Sanam Luang, the great oval field across from the gold spires of the Grand Palace.

Kite-Fighting

Kite-fights in Thailand are actually a symbolic battle of the sexes. The “Female” is a small diamond shaped kite called a pukpao, while the “male”, called a chula, is a huge star-shaped creation that requires teams of up to seventy men to send it aloft and maneuver it. The object is for one of the chula to snare a pukpao with a bamboo hook and bring it down in “male” territory; alternatively, the more agile pukpao often succeed in looping their lines around a chula and bring it crashing it crashing to earth on their side of the field.

Beetle Battles

The large male horned beetle, commonly found in the Thai countryside, becomes aggressive when confronted by another member of his sex in the presence of a female. The ensuing battle, which ends when one of the contestants is overturned, is a popular spectator sport in villages, with wagers on the outcome.

Bangkok National Museum

The history of the National Museum Bangkok dates back to 1874 when His Majesty, King Rama V opened the first public "museum" to exhibit the royal collection of King Rama IV, and other objects of general interest, at the Concordia Pavilion inside the Brand Palace. Later, the Museum was transferred to its present site, the "Wang Na", or "Palace to the Front" which had been the palace of the Prince Successor. In 1926, it was named the "Bangkok Museum" and subsequently developed into the National Museum Bangkok, when it came under the direction of the Department of Fine Arts in 1934.

The Exhibition Galleries in The National Musenm Bangkok

The National Museum Bangkok currently houses three permanent exhibition galleries:
1. The Thai History Gallery located in the front of the Siwamokhaphiman Hall, a ceremonial building.

2. The Archaeological and Art History Collections which are divided in two parts:
(i) The Prehistory Gallery, located in the back of the Siwanmokhaphiman Hall, and Gallery No. S6 on the upper floor of the South Wing Building.
(ii) The Art History Gallery, located in the North Wing Building, which displays sculptures and exhibits from the Dvaravati, Srivijaya and Lopburi periods, (before 1257 AD) up to the Bangkok period (1782)

3. The Decorative Arts and Ethnological Collection which is displayed in the old central palace buildings. This collection contains a variety of artistic, cultural and ethnographic exhibits such as gold treasures and precious stones, mother of pearl inlay, royal emblems and insignia, costumes and textiles, ceramics, carved ivory, old royal transportation, old weapons and musical instruments.

Chiang Rai travel Guide

Chiang Rai, which was founded in 1262 by King Meng Rai,
was the first capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom (Kingdom of a million rice fields), which was later conquered by Burma. It was not until 1786 that Chiang Rai became a Thai territory and was proclaimed a province during the reign of King Rama VI in 1910.

Today, Chiang Rai is a travelers paradise endowed with abundant natural tourist attractions and antiquities; the province itself is evidence of past civilization. Attractions range from magnificent mountain scenery, ruins of ancient settlements, historic sites, Buddhist shrines and ethnic villages as the province is also home to several hill tribes who maintain fascinating lifestyles. Lychee Fair This is held annually in May. Celebrating the provinces tastiest fruit, this fair features agricultural displays and exhibitions, local handicrafts, folk entertainment and beauty contests.

Songkran Festival
Songkran Festival Traditional Thai New year celebrations are best seen at Chiang Saen where 4 nations (Thailand, Laos, China and Myanmar) compete in boat races on the Mekong River. Beauty contests and cultural shows are added attractions. The festival is annually held from April 16-18.

Food in Thailand

Thai food, like Thai culture, is the product of various influences, blended to form one distinctive cuisine. Ordinary fare in Sukhothai and early Ayutthaya was simple: mainly fish, fresh or dried, mixed with rice, vegetables, a few spices, and a salty sauce made from fermented fish or shrimp. Other ingredients and flavors came through increased contact with foreign cultures, China and India in particular, and also Europe. Today it covers a wide range of dishes, many of them regional specialties; those of the northeast, for instance, are generally regarded as the spiciest; in the south seafood is plentiful and Muslim specialties appear on the menu.

Royal Cuisine

Thai food that is prepared and served with enhanced elegance is often referred to as “royal cuisine” since it is supposed to have been inspired by palace chefs. Fruit and vegetables are carved into exquisite shapes, with colors matched, turning each dish into edible art.

A Thai Meal

A Thai meal, even in rather grand households, is an information affair. Steamed rice forms the centerpiece – loose-grained in most parts of the country, glutinous in north, northeast and the other dishes are placed around it, to be eaten in any order a dinner prefers. There may be many or few of these, depending on economic status, but there is usually some kind of curry, a soup and a spiced salad, along with fish sauce, chopped chilies and other condiments, and fresh fruit as a dessert.

Sticky Rice

A glutinous variety of Thai rice, of khao niaow, is the staple in north and northeastern Thailand, largely due to the influence of neighboring Laos. Traditionally, this is rolled into small balls with the right hand and then dipped into the various liquid dishes. Special woven bamboo baskets are used to serve the rice at tables and to serve the rice at tables and to carry it into the fields by working farmers.

Fish Sauce

Nam pla is a pungent sauce made from fermented fish, served as a salt substitute in early Thai cooking and still an essential condiment on any table. A number of brands are available on the market, each with its devoted adherents, and several coastal towns on the Gulf of Thailand are famous for the production of the sauce.

Chilies

Chilies, know in Thai collectively as prik, were introduced to Asia by the Portuguese from South America in the 16th century and quickly spread so widely that their searing flavor is now basic to numerous cuisines. Thai cooking employs over forty varieties of chili, ranging from large and mild to tiny bombshells called prik-kee-nu, which translates as “mouse-dropping pepper”, on account of their shape.

Thai Noodles

Originally introduced from China, noodles often take the place of rice in quick meals supplied by vendors and sidewalk food shops. They come in numerous sizes, the most common being made from rice, flour or mung beans.

Jim Thompson House, Bangkok

After leaving the service, he decided to return and live in Thailand permanently.The hand weaving of silk, a long neglected cottage industry, captured Jim Thompson's attention, and he devoted himself to reviving the craft. Highly gifted as a designer and textile colorist, he Stairwaycontributed substantially to the industry's growth and to the worldwide recognition accorded to Thai silk.

Life and Legend of Jim Thompson

Jim Thompson or James Harrison Wilson Thompson was born in Greenville, Delaware in 1906. He attended public schools in Wilmington, went on to boarding school at St. Paul's and attended Princeton University, the family university, from 1924 to 1928.

Although Thompson had a keen interest in art, he chose to become an architect and went on to study architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a practicing architect in New York City until 1940.
With the escalation of the war in Europe in the early 1940s, Thompson volunteered for service in the United States Army, an important turning point in his life.

During the Second World War, Thompson was assigned to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), a move which offered him an opportunity to see more of the world.

Thompson as a member of an OSS group was assigned to work with French forces in North Africa. His assignments also took him into Italy, France and Asia.

To prepare for his mission, Thompson undertook rigorous training in jungle survival. He completed the course successfully.

However the war ended abruptly as Thompson and the other OSS men were en route to Bangkok. A few weeks later, he assumed the duties of OSS station chief. In late 1946, he received orders to return to the States to receive his military discharge.
Thompson was confident that with peace restored and the expansion of air travel, there would be a significant increase in leisure travel to the Far East. Upon their arrival in the capital, these travelers would need acceptable accommodation.

Few hotels in Bangkok could then even be considered of international standard. Only one had an ideal location -- the old Oriental, a former palace overlooking the Chao Phraya River that flowed through the capital.
Noel Coward

It was a meeting place for travelers and a social center for the foreign community. Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward and Somerset Maugham were just a few of its famous patrons. Excited by the prospects presented, Thompson became actively involved in the reorganization of the Oriental Hotel.

By this time, Thompson had developed a certain fondness for the country and its people. He began to seriously contemplate settling down and going into business in Thailand. He foresaw a promising future for the country and wanted to be a part of this process. He decided that upon leaving the service, he would return and take up residence in Thailand permanently.

JIM THOMPSON THAI HOUSE

The Jim Thompson House is the home of James H.W. Thompson, a self-made American entrepreneur who was the founder of the world renowned Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company. Thompson's achievements during his 25 year stay in the Kingdom of Thailand have won him much fame as the "Legendary American of Thailand".

For his contribution to the development of the Thai Silk industry, Jim Thompson was awarded the Order of the White Elephant, a decoration bestowed upon foreigners for having rendered exceptional service to Thailand. Thompson's success story in Thailand has become one of the most popular postwar legends of Asia.

In 1967, Jim Thompson went on holiday with friends to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. There he set out for a walk in the surrounding jungle but never returned. Thus began the Jim Thompson legend.

Since his disappearance in 1967, little has changed in the home that was the 'talk of the town' and the 'city's most celebrated social center'. Even today, the charming Thai style house continues to be a key stop for visitors to Bangkok.

Best time to visit Ko Chang and other islands

The season is from October to May as from mid May to mid October most of the resorts are closed, but visitors will still be able to find a few open, as some of the owners actually live there and are open all year round.

There are many resorts and bungalows on Ko Chang thus visitors purchasing boat/ferry tickets from any of the piers should inform the staff of the desired beach and resort accommodations reserved to prevent misunderstandings on the destination. Facilities on Ko Chang include mainly bungalow-type accommodations on most beaches which generally rent out bicycles and boats. Getting to Ko Chang

A 5 hours bus trip from the Eastern Bus Terminal will take visitors to the Trat Bus Terminal (departures between 06.00 a.m. until 12.00 p.m.). From there continue by song-taew transport to Laem Ngop, which is 17 kilometers from town, or the ferry landings at Ao Thammachat and Ko Chang Centre Point where services are operated all day.

Passenger boats usually leave from Laem Ngop to Ao Sapparot on Ko Chang every hour from 8.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. The trip takes 45 minutes and the fare is 50 baht per person. Visitors can continue to Hat Sai Khao, Hat Khlong Phrao and Hat Kai Bae by local bus which charges 30 baht per person. Ferry Services

Ferries depart either from Ao Thammachat or Ko Chang Center Point Landings between 7.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. with a traveling time of 30 minutes. Private vehicles can be loaded onto the ferry. Please note that vehicles used on the island should be the 4-wheel drive types as road conditions are bumpy and there are steep slopes to be negotiated. From the landing on Ko Chang are song-taew services to various points. Fares should be settled beforehand.

OTOP City Exhibition

Visitors at the Third OTOP City; OPOT or One Tampon One Product, being held from December 17-25 at the IMPACT Trade and Exhibition Centre in Muang Thong Thani, Nonthaburi Province, Thailand, on the outskirts of Bangkok are recommended cheap and high quality products produced by local residents in Thailand's southern region and by persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The Interior Ministry's Community Development Department has invited the visitors to support the southern OTOP goods, particularly those from the country's three troubled southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani and those from six Andaman coastal provinces hit by the last December tsunami, including Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong and Satun.

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security's Bureau of Welfare Promotion and Protection of Children, Youths, the Disadvantages, Persons with Disabilities and Olders Persons has, on the other hand, encouraged the visitors to support OTOP goods of PWDs.

"I'd like to invite people to support the OTOP products from the three troubled southern provinces and from the six tsunami-hit provinces, whose booths are located in the Challenger 3 Building inside the IMPACT. The southern OTOP products are in good quality and cheap," the department's deputy director-general Sayumporn Limthai told journalists here on Sunday.

Similar remarks were made by Social Development and Human Security Ministry officials for OTOP products produced by PWDs.

The Public Health Ministry's Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine Development has also invited the visitors to try traditional Thai massage services provided at the nine-day OTOP City fair, saying the services are expected to generate income to local Thai massagers about Bt one million, or at least Bt 300 per person per day.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra himself has invited members of the general public to visit the annual grand trade fair, in which nearly 5,000 booths of selected community-base products from all parts of the country are displayed.

The premier promised that his administration would continue to fully support the OTOP scheme, as it has successfully generate economic activities and people's incomes from the grassroots level.

Community-based products from Thailand's neighbouring countries, including Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam, are also showcased for the first time this year.

The government projects that this year's OTOP City fair, under the theme of "The Miracle of Thai Wisdom … OTOP to the World", will attract about 1.4 million visitors and generate up to Bt1.1 billion revenues.

The nine-day event opens from 09:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. daily.

Bangkok overview

Bangkok or Krung Thep was established as the capital of Thailand 223 years ago by King Rama I in 1782. Bangkok is located at the central part of Thailand, near the Gulf of Thailand and the east bank of Chao Phraya River which is the main River of Bangkok. Today, the tourists call Bangkok as the City of Angels because of Bangkok’s many attractions such as Temple, River and Shopping center. The population of Bangkok is about 6,000,000 (in 2005). Bangkok is the growth pole of the whole kingdom with total area of 1568.737 square kilometers.

Bangkok Weather

Bangkok has three seasons; Rainy from May to October, Winter from November to January and Summer from February to April. The average temperature is about 20-30 degree Celsius.

Bangkok Attractions

1. The Grand Palace
The Grand Palace is amazing architectural construction. It is a large complex covering an area of 218,000 square meters which was built in the early years of Chakkri dynasty.

2. Wat Pho
This large and extensive temple neighbors the Grand Palace on Thai Wang Road and houses the very impressive gigantic gold plated reclining Buddha which is some 46 meters long and 15 meters high.

3. Wat Phra Kaeo
The Temple establishes the Emerald Buddha, the Upper Terrace and the Subsidiary Buildings on the north. The point we are at is the Upper Terrace in front of the Prasat Phra Dhepbidorn.

4. Wat Arun
Wat Arun or Wat Arunrat Chawararam on the bank of Chao Phraya River is one of Landmark of Bangkok which is the big Pagoda.

5. China Town
The large communities of China in Thailand, China town is the color of Bangkok which China foods, restaurant and culture. The peoples called China town as “The Golden Road” because on the Road has many gold shops.

6. Khao San Road
Khao San Road is the mixture of foreign tourist and young local in a present day the street is very lively from cheap guesthouses, restaurants and nightlife. Example the popular food of Khao San Road is Padthai (Thai stir fried noodle) only 10 Baht.

7. National museum Bangkok
Originally the Personal Museum of King Rama IV with a collection of antiques and Royal Gifts, King Rama V subsequently opened the Sahathai Samakom Pavilion (Concordia Tower) in the Grand Palace grounds as a Public Museum.

The Tsunami Memorial Contest

"Overseas architecture firms from 49 countries are in the running for the tsunami memorial design competition, but the winner must work with local partners, according to Jedkamchorn Phromyothi, an executive member of the Council of Architects, Thailand.

He said that 380 firms entered the competition, which opened between Sept 15 and Nov 15, but fewer than 10% were Thai architecture firms. The shortlisted five conceptual designs will be announced on Dec 22.

The companies will continue working on the final design, which will go up for government consideration in May.

''They will have to work with a licensed Thai architect and engineer for the detailed design, that must include an understanding of local culture. The committee will consider their work again before presenting it to the government,'' Mr Jedkamchorn said.

The government has earmarked 45 million baht for the tsunami memorial project, said Mr Jedkamchorn, who is also the vice-chairman of the Tsunami Memorial Design Competition Task Force.

Construction of the tsunami memorial will have begun by the end of 2006, and will take 18 months to complete.

The tsunami memorial and museum will be built on 70 rai in Khao Lak Lamru National Park in Phangnga. The Council of Architects will be responsible for the building's design.

Worldwide architecture firms were able to take part in the contest, and the competition committee for the memorial includes local and overseas professional designers.

The large number of overseas architecture firms that entered the tsunami memorial competition, compared with that of Thai firms, symbolises increased competition in the design business, according to one Thai architect.

''The Thai design market has generated a lot of interest among overseas designers, especially Australian-based architecture firms,'' he said.

''They have entered our market, both as individuals and firms, and designed many resorts in famous tourist destinations.''

Thai architects will need to learn to adjust to international competition, he said."

Lumpini Park, Bangkok

Lumpini Park or Suan Lum is the name of Park but when called Suan Lum Night Bazaar is mean shopping place near Lumpini Park, open in the night. Long Live The King

This Monday, 05 december, The king of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej celebrated his 78th birthday.

The king of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej Sunday urged the public to be wise and mindful in words and action.

In his customary birthday speech to the Thai public, the King clarified at length his statement that "the King can do no wrong."

"Whatever one does, one just has to be conscious of what one is thinking and doing, and thus trying not to make mistake... I myself have made mistakes a few times, because I have always been mindful.

The King said he occasionally criticized people, and sometimes his criticism was magnified out of proportion in press reports, much to their apprehension. In fact, he noted, he has hardly ever been critical of anyone.

"The truth is the more exposed one is to the public scrutiny, the easier one becomes the target of criticism. And it could be damaging to the public if one doesn't appreciate those points of criticism," said the King.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, now the world's longest-reigning monarch, was born on Dec. 5, 1927. He became the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty in June 1946.
